Zack* became homeless due to his sexuality and the friction that this caused with some members of his family. Alongside the challenges of homelessness, Zack also lives with memory difficulties, meaning he relies on notes and reminders to help him keep track of appointments and daily tasks.
One constant source of comfort throughout this difficult period was his dog, Bear, who Zack has cared for since he was a puppy. However, finding accommodation that could accommodate both Zack and Bear proved extremely difficult, making his journey out of homelessness even longer.
A long wait for stability
After leaving fully supported accommodation, Zack spent almost three years living in one of the scheme’s dispersed flats while waiting for a permanent home. Throughout that time, he remained patient and focused on building the skills and confidence needed to live independently.
When Zack was finally offered a new-build one-bedroom flat, it marked a major turning point. Simply knowing he had a move-in date had a noticeable impact on his mental and emotional wellbeing, giving him something positive to look forward to after years of uncertainty.
Making a house a home
Although Zack was thrilled to receive the keys to his new flat, it was completely unfurnished and needed essential items before it could feel like home.
A grant from CHC helped Zack buy the things he needed to settle in and personalise his new space. The support came at exactly the right time, easing financial pressure and helping him create a home where both he and Bear could finally feel secure.
His support worker commented:
“The CHC grants are a lifeline to some of our clients and make a big difference to a lot of lives.”
Looking ahead
Moving into his own flat just before Christmas made the occasion even more special. After years of waiting, Zack is now enjoying the stability and independence he worked so hard to achieve.
“ I’m very grateful – I can’t believe I got financial help at a time when I really needed it. Making the flat my own makes so much of a difference.”
