Veterans in North Yorkshire enjoyed a summer of projects and activities designed to reduce isolation and boost confidence.
Residents at a scheme specifically for homeless veterans in North Yorkshire tend to keep to themselves, which can make it difficult for staff to build relationships with them. Many live with complex PTSD, social anxiety, or physical injuries. Staff work hard to create a positive environment, but isolation can be a daily reality, particularly as the scheme is in a remote location.
What your support enabled

If you follow us on social media, you may have seen footage of the veterans climbing Blencathra, also in the Lake District. One of the participants, Mark, filmed his experience and shared a heartfelt account of what it meant to climb a mountain when, just five weeks earlier, he had been taking drugs on the streets of Manchester.

Other highlights included a Lake District camping trip, where the veterans took part in ghyll scrambling, orienteering and even crazy golf.
It was organised by an ex resident of the scheme and long time volunteer, along with a specialist support worker. The veterans enjoyed researching walks, exploring nature and a proper break from their usual routines.
The participants commented:
“Thank you for camping – it was truly appreciated. Everything we did on camping was enjoyable. Especially the ghyll scrambling, It is one of the best things I have ever done.”
“I enjoyed the camping and would do it again. I enjoyed being alcohol free for a few days, sitting around the camp fires bonding with others. Really enjoyed in ghyll scrambling and being with nature.”
Continuing the theme of movement and exercise, a group also enjoyed weekly football sessions, culminating in a match against a different veterans’ scheme. One participant said the football team gave him a sense of belonging, while another appreciated that it helped him sleep better.

The difference
Residents are now venturing outdoors more, socialising with each other – and realising that they don’t have to face ‘civvie’ life alone.
Support from the Veterans’ Foundation helps us to give life-changing grants to homeless veterans.
