The Boundaries, in Romford, is a 10 bed high-support housing project for formerly homeless people with mental health issues.

Last year they took advantage of the short train journey to London and asked for Church Housing Trust funding to help them complete an educational trip around the sights of the capital, specifically, the Tower of London.

One support worker described their day:

“We decided to take advantage of all of the history on our doorstep at The Boundaries and paid a visit to The Tower of London.

“The residents had a great day out. The Crown Jewels, Line of Kings exhibition, The Royal Fusiliers’ headquarters and the battlements were all enjoyed.

“We checked out a view of the bridge from the battlements and watched some fantastic historical re-enactments taking place in the courtyard below.

“We had lunch by the River Thames and all agreed how lucky we are to have all of this so close by.”

Trips like this allow residents to get to know one another and to have experiences that they may not have had the chance to previously. They can incorporate an educational side, but also build self-confidence for those nervous about public spaces.

Staff also know how important it is for them to get a break from their day-to-day routines, both physically and psychologically. It helps to build their esteem, as they get to see a side of life they may have left behind when they first became homeless.
