Church Housing Trust was recently able to fund first aid training for four homeless people staying at Vaughan House supported living scheme in Guildford.

A first aid qualification increases their chances of employment across a number of care and volunteering roles, looks good on their CVs, and generally helps increase each individual’s confidence when handling situations where there might be a health or safety risk.

Those that attended learned how to place people in the recovery position, and the more advanced technique of administering CPR. This would mean that should an emergency occur, they could save someone’s life.

Each attendee enjoyed their experience and got a lot out of the training, whether they had some previous first aid knowledge or were a complete beginner. Stephen commented: “It got down to the essentials, so you always have a basic idea of how to help in an emergency situation.”

Someone new to first aid, Lisa, said that the course “was informative, especially for me as a beginner. I learnt from basics to a higher level of intensity, and I felt very encouraged after the session; I could actually be confident if a situation arose”.

Finally, Claire felt that the instructions also improved her ability to work with a group, saying that she enjoyed the course’s “clear, precise delivery, sharing of ideas and good teamwork”.
