Winter appeal

An estimated 159,000* children will spend Christmas in temporary accommodation this year. A record number of families are facing the reality of spending the holiday this way; longing for space, privacy, security, and a light at the end of the tunnel.

Imagine spending Christmas in one room, surrounded by all your belongings, far from family and friends.

This situation has been described as a national crisis; thousands of families find themselves in B&Bs, homeless schemes and hostels awaiting affordable housing that is in extremely short supply.

Temporary housing, intended as a stopgap in times of crisis, has become an indefinite reality for too many—robbing families of the stability and security they desperately need.

A toddler stares out of a window at Christmas time

It’s a terrifying situation for any adult, let alone a child.

It can feel like no one cares.

However, your support could show these children they are not alone this Christmas.

No place to call home

Temporary accommodation isn’t suited for family life.

Families find the most basic tasks and activities difficult due to the lack of space. Children struggle to study and play, parents struggle to cook fresh meals. And privacy feels like a luxury that has slipped out of reach.

Understandably, parents face a constant challenge to keep spirits up.

In many cases, families are placed miles from schools and support networks, adding to an already challenging situation.

For children, this instability can affect their education, mental health, and future.

*This is the highest since records began in 2004. Statistics from the UK Government.

Your donation could make a meaningful difference in helping us meet these families’ needs.

No space for the Christmas tree.

Nowhere to place the gifts that Santa may bring.

Children in temporary housing miss out on the normal Christmas they dream of, facing uncertainty instead of the stability they crave.

How we help homeless families in crisis

Amongst the homeless schemes we support are 14 schemes specifically for families. These include specialist domestic violence schemes which help women and children in their time of need.

Our timely, tailored grants help parents secure essential items when there is nowhere left to turn. Unlike many charities, we receive detailed applications that allow us to understand each person’s unique story. This personal approach helps us see every individual we support as more than just a number.

We also ask for feedback from grant recipients, giving us real insight into the impact of our support on their lives. Within just a few days of applying, the grant is in their hands, empowering them to take their next steps with confidence and hope.

We would like to help more families this winter, but we need your help.
